4 Days / 3 NightsPickup from your hotel, riad or preferred meeting point in Marrakech Drop-off at your hotel, riad or preferred location in Marrakech

Overview

Leave the busy streets of Marrakech behind and head toward the Sahara on a private four-day journey through some of southern Morocco’s most memorable landscapes. The slower pace of this itinerary gives you more time to enjoy the road, stop at panoramic viewpoints and explore places such as Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge without feeling rushed. Along the way, the scenery changes from mountain passes and green valleys to rocky plateaus and desert villages. Near Merzouga, you will meet your camel caravan and cross the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi as the sun begins to set. The evening is spent in a desert camp, where dinner, traditional music and a clear Sahara sky create one of the most memorable moments of the trip. The return to Marrakech includes an overnight stay in Ouarzazate and another scenic crossing of the High Atlas Mountains, making this route a comfortable choice for travelers who want to experience the desert while keeping the daily driving manageable.

Day by Day

Tour Itinerary

Your journey begins after breakfast with pickup from your hotel, riad or preferred meeting point in Marrakech. As the city fades behind you, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains. You will travel through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, reaching more than 2,200 metres above sea level. The drive includes time for photographs and short stops overlooking mountain villages, green valleys and traditional Amazigh landscapes. The route continues to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its earthen architecture and fortified village. You will have time to walk through the ksar, learn about its history and enjoy lunch nearby. Afterward, continue toward Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the desert because of its kasbahs and film studios. In the afternoon, travel through the Valley of Roses before reaching the Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight accommodation are provided in a comfortable hotel or riad in the Dades area.

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through palm groves, traditional villages and wide desert landscapes. The first major stop is Todra Gorge, where towering limestone cliffs rise on both sides of a narrow valley. You will have time to walk beside the river, enjoy the scenery and take photographs. The road then continues through Tinjdad and Jorf, areas known for palm groves and ancient underground irrigation systems. Later, arrive in Erfoud, a desert town associated with fossils, dates and trade routes. By late afternoon, reach Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Your luggage will be transferred separately while you join a camel caravan for the ride across the sand. Watch the colours of the dunes change as the sun sets, then arrive at the desert camp for dinner. The evening usually includes traditional Amazigh music around the fire and time to enjoy the quiet Sahara sky.

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast at the camp, return to the village by camel or four-wheel-drive vehicle, where your driver will be waiting. The return journey begins through the desert towns of the region. Depending on timing and interest, you may stop at a fossil workshop in Erfoud or pause to admire the surrounding palm groves. Continue west through Todra Gorge and the Dades region before reaching the Valley of Roses. Local cooperatives in this area produce rose water, oils and traditional cosmetic products. In the afternoon, travel through southern Morocco’s kasbah landscapes toward Ouarzazate. Dinner and overnight accommodation are provided in a hotel in Ouarzazate.

After breakfast, begin the final day with some time in Ouarzazate. Depending on the schedule, you may visit Taourirt Kasbah or pass by the city’s well-known film studios. The journey then continues toward Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas Mountains. As you cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass once more, there will be opportunities to stop for mountain views, photographs and lunch in a local village or restaurant. In the afternoon, descend toward Marrakech and return to your hotel, riad or preferred drop-off point. Your four-day desert journey ends in Marrakech after a relaxed route through Morocco’s mountains, valleys, kasbahs and Sahara landscapes.
