8-Day Northern Morocco Tour from Tangier to Marrakech

8 Days / 7 NightsPickup from Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, Tangier port, your hotel or a preferred meeting point in Tangier Drop-off at Marrakech Menara Airport

Overview

Morocco changes character several times along this eight-day route from Tangier to Marrakech. Northern mountain towns, imperial medinas, cedar forests, desert plateaus and historic kasbahs all form part of the same journey. The first stages pass through Tetouan and Chefchaouen before continuing to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the imperial city of Meknes and the historic medina of Fes. From Fes, the road crosses the Middle Atlas Mountains through Ifrane, the cedar forests near Azrou, Midelt and the palm-filled Ziz Valley. The landscape gradually becomes drier as the route approaches Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. A sunset camel ride leads across the sand to a Sahara camp, where dinner, traditional Amazigh music and a night beneath the desert sky complete the evening. The final part of the tour passes through Todra Gorge, Dades Valley, the Rose Valley, Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. A guided day in the Red City provides a relaxed ending before the airport transfer.

Day by Day

Tour Itinerary

Your eight-day journey begins with pickup from Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, Tangier port, your hotel or another agreed meeting point. Depending on your arrival time, a short introduction to Tangier can be arranged before leaving the coast and heading toward the Rif Mountains. The route passes through Tetouan, a northern Moroccan city shaped by strong Andalusian influences. A short stop can be made when the arrival schedule allows. Continue through the mountain scenery toward Chefchaouen. After checking into your accommodation, spend time walking through the blue-painted lanes, small squares, local shops and hillside viewpoints. The evening is free to enjoy the calm atmosphere of the medina. Approximate distance: 150 kilometres Approximate driving time: 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding visits and stops Overnight: Chefchaouen

After breakfast, enjoy a little more time in Chefchaouen before leaving the Rif Mountains. The road continues toward Volubilis, one of Morocco’s most important Roman archaeological sites. Walk among ancient columns, residential ruins, triumphal arches and mosaic floors that have survived for centuries. Continue to Meknes, one of Morocco’s imperial cities. Depending on the available time, stops may include Bab Mansour, Place El Hedim and sections of the historic medina. Later in the afternoon, make your way to Fes and settle into your riad or hotel. Approximate distance: 260 kilometres Approximate driving time: 4 hours 30 minutes, excluding visits and meal stops Overnight: Fes

Meet your local guide after breakfast and begin a full-day visit through Fes. The day starts around the Royal Palace Gate and the historic Jewish Quarter before continuing toward viewpoints overlooking the old city. Enter the medina and follow its narrow lanes through food markets, artisan workshops, religious buildings and traditional neighbourhoods. Possible visits include Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al Quaraouiyine area, historic fountains, caravanserais and panoramic views of the Chouara Tanneries. Your guide will provide context about the city’s architecture, craftsmanship and daily life while helping you navigate one of Morocco’s most intricate medinas. The remainder of the afternoon is free for shopping, additional visits or time at your accommodation. Driving: Minimal city transportation Overnight: Fes

Leave Fes early in the morning and begin the journey toward the Sahara through the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, a quiet mountain town known for its gardens, clean streets and alpine-style architecture. Continue toward the cedar forests near Azrou. Barbary macaques may sometimes be seen in this area, although wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. The road passes through mountain villages and open landscapes before reaching Midelt, where a lunch stop can be arranged. After lunch, continue south through changing mountain scenery and descend toward the Ziz Valley. Stop at a viewpoint overlooking palm groves, villages and oasis settlements. Pass through Errachidia and Erfoud before reaching Merzouga in the late afternoon. At the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, meet your camel caravan and ride across the sand as the sun begins to set. After arriving at the desert camp, enjoy mint tea, settle into your tent and have dinner. The evening usually includes traditional Amazigh music around the fire. Approximate distance: 470 kilometres Approximate driving time: 7 hours 30 minutes, excluding visits, meal stops and the camel ride Overnight: Sahara desert camp near Merzouga

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast, return to Merzouga by camel or four-wheel-drive vehicle, where your driver will be waiting. Continue toward Rissani, a traditional market town with a long history connected to regional trade and caravan routes. A short visit may be arranged depending on the day and available time. The route then passes through desert towns, palm groves and rocky landscapes before reaching Tinghir and Todra Gorge. Walk beneath the high limestone cliffs and spend time beside the river. Lunch can be arranged in the gorge or in Tinghir. In the afternoon, continue toward Dades Valley. The road passes cultivated fields, traditional villages, kasbahs and unusual rock formations. Arrive at your hotel or riad for dinner and overnight accommodation. Depending on the schedule, a panoramic stop can be made near Taourirt Kasbah or one of the local studios. The next visit is Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village built with traditional earthen architecture. Walk through the ksar and take in the views across the surrounding valley. After lunch, cross the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Stops can be made for mountain views, photographs and short breaks.
